Chatbot versus AI agent
How a chatbot and an AI agent differ, where the line sits, and which term fits which system.
Chatbot versus AI agent is a common question, because the two overlap: a chatbot holds a conversation, while an AI agent both converses and takes actions to complete a task.
The core difference
A chatbot answers: it holds a conversation and replies to questions. An AI agent also acts: it can call tools and systems to look something up or complete a task, such as checking an order or booking an appointment. Put simply, every AI agent can chat, but not every chatbot can act.
Where the line sits
- Scripted chatbot: fixed buttons and canned replies, no real understanding.
- AI chatbot: understands free questions and answers from a knowledge base.
- AI agent: understands, answers, and takes actions through connected tools.
Which term to use
The words are often used loosely, and marketing blurs them further. The useful test is capability: if the system only talks, chatbot is the fair word; if it also does things on the customer's behalf and hands off to a human when needed, it is an AI agent.
